Breakfast for dinner?

DSCN0923I rarely have anything more than cold cereal or oatmeal for breakfast.  Yes, I know my poor deprived children:)  Getting breakfast in the morning for 6 under 7 years of age is no easy task, so I leave breakfast making to my husband on Sunday mornings or to a special meal night during the week.

DSCN0920We occasionally plan a breakfast for a dinner.  The children love it.  We might make smoothies, omelets, waffles, egg casserole, or turkey bacon and sausage.  It is a nice change for the normal routine.  DSCN0900

Try it with your family, your children will think it is fun to have breakfast for dinner.

21 days to a more natural home series part 6 –window and mirror cleaner

all natural home seriesOn day 6 of our series we will be giving you an alternative to replace your current window and mirror cleaner.

This all natural window and mirror cleaner was a hard one for me to finally make the switch over to.  I could never understand why it made all my mirrors streaky.  Then after some internet searching I realized that there was detergent residue leftover on my mirrors and windows from my previous commercial cleaners.  So don’t be alarmed and think it doesn’t work at first, it’s just you have lots of detergent left on your items and it needs to be rubbed off a little harder at first.  In time it will not even show.

This has a stronger smell as it has alcohol in it, I use peppermint essential oil and the smell dissipates after first use.  You can wipe with a microfiber cloth, or better yet use some old black and white newspaper and clean your windows, you will be amazed at the clarity.

Mix the following in your spray bottle

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup alcohol–good ol rubbing alcohol
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 2 squirts of castile soap
  • 12 drops peppermint essential oil—or your favorite scent

21 days to a more natural home series part 8—wood cleaner

I love my large dining room table especially after it has been cleaned with wood cleaner.  Nice, smooth and shiny.  I thought that could only be achieved by using Pledge or the furniture oils I have purchased over the years.  They definitely were not all- natural, the smell was bad, I hated cleaning my entertainment center with my baby playing next to it on the floor.

This recipe I found printed on the side of my spray bottle and I tried it and love it.  Mix the following into your spray bottle.

  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

Shake before using.  Spray  on your cloth or directly onto your wood.  Then wipe with a clean dry cloth.

Another plain and simple alternative to chemical filled cleaners.

21 days to a more natural home series part 7—floors

all natural home series

Having little crawlers for the last 5 years of my life, I have spent many hours on my hands and knees hand washing my floors to make sure they were all  sparkly clean for my little ones.  At first I used tough commercial cleaners to get rid of all the bacteria on the floors, then I thought to myself, “this can’t be safe for my babies?!?!”  Then I started hand washing with vinegar everyday, the smell was not so pleasant day after day.  After making my all-purpose spray, that was my choice for washing each day. Needless to say, I went through much of it.

I have since discovered my cleaning “gem”.  My husband bought me a steam mop for Christmas a few years back and I could not believe that I had not purchased one earlier.  Hello???? cleans all natural with hot steam, no chemicals involved.  Wouldn’t you want your babies hands and feet covered in an all natural hot steam instead of chemical filled pine sol????

This was a no brainer for me, I recommend everyone to get one of these, they are great.  I own the Shark Steam Mop and it has worked for years, day after day with no problems. I am sure they have  a more advanced version, like one that vacuums would probably be great too, but this works great for us.

21 days to a more natural home series part 5 –scouring powder

all natural home series
On day 5 of our series I will show you how to make an all natural scouring powder that will replace your comet.

The problem area that we have in our household is the tub.  It can get real nasty fast.  I relied on comet to get all the soap scum off of the walls and then rinsed like crazy so that my children would not be sitting in those chemicals.  Even while giving them a bath I knew there were still chemicals in their tub water.  But no need to worry anymore.

This recipe is all natural, and works just as well as comet does.  We have hard water and it leaves rust stains in the tub.  I have found that if I use this on a daily basis it will remove the rust.   But if I wait too long then its harder to scrub off the rust, the key is maintenance.

Mix up the following 3 ingredients and then I place in a recycled parmesan cheese container.  I have found it is easier to apply it in tubs and toilets this way.

  •  1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup borax
  • 1 cup salt

That’s it, easy and simple.  The way life was intended.
