My children love corn dogs. To purchase enough for this large family requires you purchase 2 boxes which in turn leads to an expensive meal. Plus the fact that they are deep fried, my children do not need all that extra fat and calories. I had to come up with something different.
And I did.
For this recipe you will need the following:
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/3 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 T sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 egg slightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 6 hotdogs
For our large family we did quadruple this recipe and made 24 hot dogs.
Mix your dry ingredients together first, and then make a well in the center and add your wet ingredients. Mix until well blended. It will be thick. You are going to need to roll it out.
I sprinkled flour on the counter top and rolled out a batch of cornbread dough.
I tried every way to coat the hotdog under the sun. I tried cutting and then wrapping the dough around. Tried pinching it this way and that way. Then I realized I would treat it like my childrens’ playdough. I placed an amount around the hotdog and then….
I started rolling it out. Like we make snakes for playdough.
When i was finished it made a perfectly smooth coating to the hotdog. So much easier then pinching and wrapping.

You can bake at 400 for about 20 minutes until browned.
Or you can place them onto a cookie sheet and then freeze them. After completely frozen, place into freezer bags and put away for a late night snack, or a quick lunch:)

I am glad that they have helped you out. We like to stay simple and basic for most things:)
Do I need to put cornmeal on counter with the rolling flour?
yes we did
what kind of flour do you use? I use self rising so I don’t use baking powder? is that true or do you still have to use baking powder?
I believe you don’t:) I use white whole wheat flour….like white flour but with healthier parts of wheat:)
