4th grade reading comprehension

Here are some reading books that we will be doing for 4th grade this year along with comprehension questions. I will assign a book and have them read 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day depending upon the reading level of the child.

Thank you for your work that has blessed so many families.
I have a question about the reading comprehension.
My child is in 4th grade (9 years old, 10 in January). She reads well, but does not enjoy reading as much, and will only read half a chapter before getting tired…no matter what book. We’ve tried changing books to see if ANYTHING will interest her, and so far, no luck.
Anyway, what do you think? Should I go back a level and let her read shorter books? Should I use the 4th grade reading list and just let her take twice or three times as long to get through the book? That would mean reading less books per year than what you have laid out. Please give me some advice. Thank you!

    1. I have had a couple like that. Get her a book she enjoys reading. If the level is lower, than do it, she will eventually catch up. All my kids have:) As long as she is reading something. It is better if they can enjoy it, instead of dreading it:)

  2. Boxcar Children and The Whipping Boy no longer work. Just a quick question because new to this site. Do your $25 amazon books cover these or are those lessons different from online version?

  4. Amy,
I just discovered your Blog. My daughter is in 4th grade and she is struggling with reading and writing. She attends public school as I work full time out of the home. She just does not seem interested in reading. I have the set of Little House on the Prairie series from when I was little. She just does not want to read them. What could I try to get her more interested so her grades improve?

    1. Find books she enjoys is your biggest key. I have a lot of book recommendations that my kids have used or you can google 4th grade book lists for girls. Try a variety. Mine have all liked different kinds and types. once she finds ones she enjoys you will be all set:)

Hi Amy! My daughter and I have started with your curriculum. Thank you so much for the work you have put into this. You are truly an inspiration and I’m excited for this school year using your amazing website. You are so appreciated. I have a question regarding the comprehension for ‘The Boxcar Children.” I don’t see a link for the printable pages. I have only been able to find comprehension questions for chapters 1-3 for free. Do you have a good source where I can find the rest of what we need?

Thank you again for what you do. Grades 1-3 have been a struggle for us but we’ve somehow made it through. Upon discovering what you’ve created, we are feeling relieved and excited to start 4th grade. We have finally found something to fit into our busy schedule between my full-time job and her taekwondo. We are beyond grateful. I could go on. Literally almost in tears over here.

    1. I appreciate your kind words…I would have added that years ago. I would do a quick google search for reading comprehension pages .pdf and that should help find a new one:)

  9. Hi!
First off, let me thank you for your time and encouragement to homeschool moms out there. I have been homeschooling for four years now. I have six wonderful children and I am always looking for new things to try, however, I have been wanting a more simple curriculum to use, and this is right up my ally! I wanted to point out, as I was going through the links for the fourth grade reading comprehension, I noticed that there were two links that did not work, Little house in the big woods and The Borrowers. Once again, Thank You for your time and love toward other homeschool families.

    1. I appreciate your kind words. They were outside links, I will remove them. If you need ones..google the name of the book and comprehension questions.pdf and you may find more:)
