making homemade pretzels a fun activity

This is a fun activity to do with your children.  Mix up a batch and then let them create different shapes from the dough.  It is fairly easy to do and will be a yummy tasting treat when you are done.

Here is what you will need:

  • 3 pkgs yeast
  • 2 1/2 c warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 6 3/4 c flour
  • 1/2 c lukewarm water mixed with 4 tsp baking soda

In a mixing bowl add the yeast, sugar, and warm water.  Let sit till bubbly.

Next start mixing in the flour.  i like to do 1 cup at a time, whisking at first, then going to a wooden spoon.

I then start mixing it by hand, kneading it in the bowl.2013-11-04_00068

Let sit in your same mixing bowl until you are ready to use it.  If you need to punch it down, do so and let it rise up until you are ready.2013-11-04_00142

Here are my girls having fun creating different letters from the dough.  After you have your shape all formed, dip it or brush on the water/baking soda mixture and then sit it on your cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with pretzel salt.2013-11-04_00153 We did these on our “baking day” and then we gave part of our “goods” to a neighbor.  My daughter made the pretzels into the shapes of the neighbors first names.  She also made one for each person in our family.2013-11-04_00163Bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes.  2013-11-04_00170

creamy chicken breasts large family food idea

This is a great large family food idea and a good Sunday afternoon meal.  You can put it together and then enjoy a nice meal together with your family.  Depending upon how large your family is you can cut back on the amount of chicken breasts and then just divide the rest of the ingredients by 1/2.

You will need:

  • 6 chicken breasts–I flatten mine and slice them into thin pieces
  • 8 slices of swiss or provolone cheese
  • 2 cans of cream of chicken soup
  • 1 -16 oz container of sour cream
  • 2 boxes of stuffing mix

Grease your glass baking dish and then lay your pieces of chicken breast on the bottom of the dish.  I sprinkle mine with Lawrys seasoning salt and pepper, you can do that or neither,  your choice.

I then place the pieces of cheese slices over the chicken.

In a small mixing bowl, I add the 2 cans of soup and sour cream and mix thoroughly.2013-11-04_00041

Spread that over top of your chicken.2013-11-04_00042

Sprinkle the stuffing mix over top of the chicken.  Use boxed stuff.2013-11-04_00043

Bake at 350 for an hour.  Test your chicken to make sure it is done.  I serve this with mashed potatoes for an easy dinner.

Delicious and simple to make.
